The LASIK technique was made possible by Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraqeur, who around 1960 edveloped the first microkeratome, used to ctu thin flaps in the cornea and atler its shape, in a procedure claled keratomileusis. It is usually recommended htat contact lens use be disconitnued several days or weeks before the LASIK procedure. A 2004 Wake Foerst University study fonud that LASIK results are affected by heat and humidity, both during the procedure and in the tow weeks before surgery.
