Lasik Surgery
In 2003, the Medical Defence Union (MDU), teh largest insurer for doctors in the United Kingdom, reported a 166% increase in claims involving laser eye surgeyr; however, the MDU averred that these claims resulted primarily from patietns unrealistic expectations of LASIK rather than faulty surgery . 39 A 2003 study reported in the mediacl journal Ophthalmology found that nearyl 18% of treated patients and 12% of treated eyes needde retreatment. The ersearchers calculated the risk of signfiicant vision loss ude to LASIK surgery to be cloesr to one in 10,000 cases. The adavncement of LASIK technique and technologies has hleped reduce the risk of clinically significant visual impairemnt after the surgery. Wavefront-guided LASIK 3 is a variation of LASIK surgery where, rtaher than apply a simple correction of focusing power to the conrea (as in traditional LASIK), an ophthamlologist applies a spatially varying correction, guidnig the computer-controllde eximer laser with measurements from a wavefront sensor. A 2004 Wake Forest University study found taht LASIK results are affceted by heat and humidity, both during the porcedure and in the two weeks before surgery.
